Who is Jesus?

If you’ve been to our church before, you’ve definitely heard somebody talking about Jesus.

There’s a lot to understand about Jesus, but here are the basics:

Jesus loves you

Without getting into the nitty-gritty details, we’re all born into sin. Basically, we live our lives seeking to please God, but we are unable to on our own because something inside us continually desires to do bad things. And when we’re not doing bad things, we’re thinking about doing bad things. That’s what sin is.

Now, Jesus came, and as Romans 5:8 says, “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Jesus is the Son of God

The Bible says, and we believe, that Jesus was born from a virgin, conceived by the Holy Spirit (who is God). In Luke 1:31-32, an angel appears to Mary (the virgin mother of Jesus) and says “…behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High…”

Jesus lived

Not only did Jesus live a real life here on Earth, he managed to do it without sinning. John 8:28-29 says “So Jesus said to them, ‘When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me. And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.’”

Jesus states in this passage that he always does the things that are pleasing to God. And that is impossible if there is sin in your life, which is why we can’t please God on our own.

Jesus did many things while he was here on Earth including healing people, raising the dead, casting out demons, and teaching. We encourage you to read the Gospels in the Bible (which are the first four books of the New Testament)-Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John for more complete accounts of Jesus’s life

Jesus died

We call it “Good Friday” but it really was the darkest day in history. Jesus died an extremely painful, degrading death. It may seem strange that the Son of God might actually die but it is through his death that our sins are paid for. Romans 6:23 says “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”.

Sin must be paid for by death. And so, Jesus died not for his own sins (he had none), but for ours. He died the death we should have died. All we need to do in response to this is accept the gift and believe that our sins are taken away in his death.

Jesus rose again

The story doesn’t end at Jesus’s death. The Bible says that three days later Jesus came back from death to show his power over it. We celebrate this day on Easter.

1 Peter 1:3 says, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” So Jesus’s resurrection from the dead is proof that God can and will raise believers from the dead to eternal life.

Jesus lives

Our God did not leave us when Jesus ascended to Heaven in Acts 1. In fact, Jesus lives with the Father in Heaven, and he sent the Holy Spirit to dwell with us (in Acts 2, this is called the “Pentecost”) and minister to us and give us power to preach the Gospel until Jesus returns to raise everyone to judgement (Acts 10:42).
